Henry Hudson
Henry Hudson was an English sea explorer and navigator born in England in 1565. Not much was known about his parents. What is known is that he had four brothers by the names Edward Hudson, John Hudson, Christopher Hudson, and Thomas Hudson. Before Hudson went on his four voyages, he married Katherine Hudson and had three sons by the names of Oliver Hudson, John Hudson, and Richard Hudson. Hudson had the goal of locating a shorter route from Europe to Asia. Along his voyages, he faced many great challenges of the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and northeastern Canada. The Netherlands and the Dutch East India Company wanted Hudson to explore the Northeast passage. When Hudson came back with no finding of the Northeast passage, the Netherland and the Dutch East India Company lost faith. Wealthy English merchants thought he could find it if he got a second chance so, they paid for another trip to find the Northeast passage. The Muscovy company gave him order of a ship named the Hopewell, which is the ship that Hudson and his eleven crew members including his son, John, went on for their first voyage in 1607. On his second voyage in 1608, Hudson used the Hopewell again. This time he had thirteen crew members and again his son, John. Later on Hudson’s third voyage in 1609, which was sponsored by the Netherland and the Dutch East India Company, he sailed a ship called the Half-Moon, which he had much trouble with. The trouble was that the majority of his eighteen crew members spoke Dutch, and he did not. On his fourth and final voyage from 1610 to 1611 he was sponsored by wealthy English merchants and was given a ship named the Discovery to sail on. On this ship he had twenty crew members. Henry Hudson had many different voyages and was sponsored by many different people.
Throughout Henry Hudson’s voyages he encountered many obstacles. One of them was ice. When Hudson set off for his first voyage across the North Pole, he had to get beyond the ring of ice around the Arctic Ocean.
