Hamlet is a very well-known play across the world. Many students have been required to read this play in school. Many people feel that Hamlet is the perfect play and best of all of Shakespeare’s work. Although Hamlet is a play it is written in verse which is poetry. The more sophisticated characters speak in verse and the common people speak in prose. This play has been read by many students through the years. Hamlet was written over 400 years ago and therefore is written in a style that can be very difficult to understand today. The architecture of the mansion in this version is very 21st Century; it does not have the elaborate details and architecture that would have been in the original play. The 2009 movie is a modern version, meaning that all of the people are in modern clothing. Ophelia is seen in a very low V-neck dress which shows some slight cleavage and is above the knees, she is of royalty so you wouldn’t think a daughter of a king would be seen in a dress like this. In one scene Hamlet is seen in a red shirt that looks like one of those super hero t-shirts where the abdominal muscles are drawn on the shirt, if the shirt isn’t bad enough he is wearing it with a pair of blue jeans. Although the movie did tell the baseline story of the play I don’t think the movie captured what Shakespeare would have liked it to. The story of the play followed the original play but I think the overall mental image and picture has more to do with the story than the storyline itself. I thought it was strange that probably the most famous speech of Hamlet the “To be, or not to be” speech was cut significantly. I think that was a poor decision as it is one of the most recognizable parts of the play. The movie didn’t capture any of the original settings and those settings build on the meaning of the play. The movie kept the story line, but then decided to take its own twist and turn on making the play feel like it occurred in the 20th Century.
