I'm very impressed with the years of service both Attorneys have given to the legal system. In Georgia a prosecutor for almost 16 years I commend her and all her hard work. The laws in Georgia seem a bit leanit when it comes to Simple Assault, Simple Battery or Battery. Yes these are all misdemeanor offenses, but I believe they will escalade if the punishment isn't more sirvere it's just the beginning of the abuse in my opinon. All three of these misdemeanor offenses are punishable by up to 12 months in jail or on probation or a combination thereof and up to a $1000 fine. Most likely they will get probation or very little jail time and be back out harassing the victims. That’s $650 for this once a week class that will hurt the aggressor financially and their efforts once done with the program will be towards getting back on their feet and not harming the victims. Ms. Slezak doesn’t have an official no-drop policy. She hasn’t worked in an office with an official policy like that. Aggressive prosecution of domestic violence cases has always been encouraged in her office ,She would not drop a case because a victim requests her to do so, and she also would not drop a case just because it is a domestic violence case. According to the text as far as the "no drop policy" it's often seen as philosophy not as a strict policy (Buzawa, Buzawa, Stark, & Buzawa, 2012,). The book also states that domestic assault victims were more than nine times more likely than non domestic assault victims to report that they wanted the prosecutor to drop their cases, thereby frustrating court personnel (Hotaling & Buzawa 2001).
