Every academic institution has a set of objectives that are lined with a purpose. The purpose is to educate individuals to be well -rounded members of society. These individuals may become leaders or simply productive members of society, however it is their education that gives them the backbone to be either. Every organization has a set of goals and a mission that separates it from all other institutions as well as gives it a certain reputation in the community. The overall mission, vision, philosophy, and goals are the underlying purpose of the organization that makes it unique, Iwasiw(2015). The mission simply describes why the institution offers certain degree programs over others, why they only accept a select number of students, or why they have the requirement that they do, Calder(2011). According to Education Reform(2014), the mission is described as a statement that provides the institutions purpose and commitments to the students, stakeholders, and the community. Some people tend to use the terms mission and vision interchangeably, however the two have their own distinct meaning for the institution, Education Reform(2014). According to Calder(2014), the mission statement assists the institution in learning what things are good so they can proceed and build on those things and on the other hand to discover what things are bad so they can rid themselves of the negative things. According to Calder(2014), a strong mission statement can define an institutions success.
Philosophy Defined
According to Sadker(2015,para1), “the philosophy is a statement of beliefs that governs what and how students are taught.” Philosophy is the passion that someone has for learning. According to Florida State University(2015), ones philosophy is how they define themselves and the world around them. Philosophy is ones own ideas about the way they live and why they do things the way they do. Individuals have their own unique philosophy that defines their take on the importance of education. Philosophy is what outlines the curriculum and development.
