In the United States of America, we have many monuments to remember certain groups of people. But the question is, do we remember them enough? In this paper I will be discussing the history of Missouri, and the monuments it has put up to remember that history. The monument and historical sites put up in Missouri reflect the history of the state well, but there could be improvement to some aspects of them. The history of Missouri deserve to be remembered. The state was named after the original Indian inhabitants, the Missouria Indians. Most of the Missouria tribe was killed off when the variola virus broke out. But Native Americans were not the only highlight of the history of Missouri. One important event that took place in Missouri was the beginning of the Oregon Trail in Independence in 1836. Another important event that took place in Missouri was the Battle of Wilson’s Creek also known as the Battle of Oak Hills in 1861. The things that occurred in the history of Missouri helped get it where it is today and all deserve to be remembered. Throughout the state of Missouri, there are many historical markers and things that remember the history of the state. One thing that remembers the American Indian society in Missouri is the Missouri American Indian Center and Cultural Park. The center is located in Miami, Missouri at Van Meter State Park. It remembers the Otoe-Missouria, Osage, Ioway, and Sac and Fox tribes of Missouri. It also remembers many other tribes that weren’t ever in Missouri.
