"Mitotic index or frequency is used to determine the rate of somatic cell growth to determine if the rate of growth is abnormal (Haapasalo et. Al, 1989)." Cancer refers to any one of a large number of diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue (Mayo Clinic Staff). Survival rates are steadily improving over the years with different methods being used to cure cancer. Some are good, successful fond improvements and some are fails. There are various numbers of signs and symptoms that forms cancers. Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells (Mayo Clinic Staff). DNA comes with a set of instructions that tells the cell what functions to perform, errors in the instructions can cause the cell to stop its normal function making it cancerous. Mistakes in gene mutations can also allow the cell to do plenty of wrongdoings. These mistakes in gene mutation may allow the cell to grow and divide rapidly making all the new cells being to perform all the same. Normal cells know when to stop growing so they have the amount needed in each type of cell. The cancer cells are being told by the tumor suppressor gene to keep growing and accumulating. Changes or mutations in DNA repair gene may also mean that other errors aren’t corrected. These leading cells are all cancerous. You have a numerous of imaging techniques that are used to detect where a tumor is located and what organs are being infected such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and ultrasound scans. Using a microscope to look at the cancer cells is really the only way to diagnose cancer. This is called a biopsy.
