The painting has a sort of triangle shape, with the main point being Mary and Joseph and then the placement of the rest of the people being further and further back. In Italy, Caravaggio was among the earliest and most significant painters in the Baroque movement. He was adept at the technique of Chiaroscuro, the painterly technique of using light and shadow to show three-dimensional form but this led to issues. Caravaggio’s work was critiqued for its unashamed realism, particularly in his religious subjects. “The Denial of Saint Peter” is an example of one of his religious pieces.
