But in Islam, Mohammed declares himself as the last and the greatest of the prophets, whom his revelations are pure and uncorrupted. Hinduism: Polytheistic or Monotheistic? Regarded as the 3rd largest religion in the world, originating back to 2750-1750 BCE, Hinduism is a very unique religion practiced mostly by India (80 Percent). When asking the question whether this religion is polytheistic or monotheistic, it can be said that Hinduism can really be considered both of these terms due to different aspects. Hinduism is polytheistic, meaning that this religion worships many different gods all containing different elements, but Hinduism also is monotheistic, as its origins come from one sacred book, the Bhagavad Gita. Hinduism worshipers believe in many different gods, and worshipers participate in different pujas (rituals) to these gods.
During the Roman Republic wars, Christianity became more relevant as the Jews relied upon the Messiah to provide protection and offer good will through difficult times. Pagan’s also played a part in the rise of Christianity but favored practicing with traditional Roman gods. These two forms of religions later developed and were blended by Jesus of Nazareth as he preached to his many followers. Shortly after Jesus’ crucifixion, it was claimed that he had risen from his tomb, this resurrection would be the focal point of Christianity and transposed in the writing of the New Testament. Islam’s faith was also centered on the preaching’s of one man, a prophet named Mahammad who was known to speak the direct words of their God, Allah.
Christianity and Judaism are strictly monotheistic religions, which means that they only believe in the existence of one all-powerful God. Christians, however, also believe in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. In Christianity, Jesus is not only the Son of God, but is God Himself. Often in the New Testament, Jesus refers to God as His “father” and actually communicates to Him through prayer as if the two were separate beings. This is a problem because this means there is more than one god in the Christian religion, which very strongly based around the belief in one true God.
In the Christian religion, like many others, the belief in a single, ultimate, powerful being is upheld and practiced. However, unlike other monotheistic religions, the Christian belief in God is expressed in three parts: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This aspect of Christianity is unique and is part of what defines it. Although some people may think so, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three separate beings. They are united as one in the Trinity, the same all-powerful God.
The word monotheism comes from the Greek monos which means one and theos which means god. Most monotheistic systems tend to not only believe in and worship a single god, but they also deny the existence of the gods of any other religious faiths. Usually Atheism is used to contradict Monotheism since Atheism is in a broad sense the rejection of the belief of any God. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no Gods whatsoever and they believe we were merely coincidental. This is why atheism is contrasted with monotheism.
The Bible teaches the Trinitarian concept of one God existing as three persons. In all these religions, God is the supreme-being whose power is never questionable (Fisher 247). However, there are different views on the monotheistic God from each of these religions. For example, Zoroastrianism views God as the source of good and not evil at any single instance. On the contrary, Judaists and Christians see God as the source of both evil and good. Moreover, the recognition of God as monotheistic was founded on the revelation key prophets received in each faith.
Christianity and Judaism are both monotheistic religions that share many similarities. Both religions were found in present day Israel and share a common writing. They shared the same Ten Commandments; Torah for the Jews and the Old Testaments for the Christians. Even though they are common in many different ways, they are also very different. Their marriage rites, rituals and the meaning of life are different.
Two sections of theism that are perhaps the most popular and well-known are monotheism and polytheism. There is a lot of discussion about both of these sectors. Knowing the histories, how they are viewed currently, and exactly what the differences of these two are can help us better understand how these two theisms come into play in the world. Allah in Islam stands for God and carries the same meaning as in Christianity. In Islam, the angel Gabriel spoke to Mohammed and encouraged him to preach to the people and spread the word of Allah. Jesus was said to be the son of God but spoke almost exclusively to Jews (Woodhead, 2004, p 11). The prophets, Mohammed and Jesus, are looked at as symbols of God or Allah. These prophets serve as voices that guide their people 's actions through scripture.
