Ali and O'Brien both express disagreement towards the war and participate in the war due to moral ethics and moral beliefs. Ali's reason for not trying to fight in the war is due to his deep connection to Islam. O’Brien is more about his moral belief that the Vietnam War was wrong and he is against killing people for uncertain reasons. They both make compelling arguments for why they don't want to fight in the war and Ali ultimately would have the better decision for why he doesn’t want to fight in the war due to his religion. Ali is a devout Muslim who puts his religion first before everything, he won't disgrace his religion by enslaving people and murdering Vietnamese people. The only way that he will fight in the war is if the people causing the war will put their blood and their families on the line if it is that precious. It was stated by O'Brien that, “There should be a law, I think. If you support a war, if you think it's worth the price, that's fine, but you have to put your precious fluids on the line. You have to head for the front, hook up with an infantry unit and help spill the blood. And you have to bring along your wife, or your kids, or your lover.” This shows that if the leader who starts the war thinks that it is worth it, then you should put your blood and your kids, then he will maybe be willing to fight in the war. Overall, Ali would make the better compelling argument due to him losing way more than O’Brien. Ali is willing to give up millions of dollars and willing to risk his stats. It was stated by Ali that, “I have been warned that to take such a stand would put my prestige in jeopardy and could cause me to lose millions of dollars which should accrue to me as the champion.” For Ali to give up status and millions of dollars for his religion, shows that overall Ali is making a better argument. In conclusion, both Ali and O’Brien make compelling arguments as to why they don't want to fight in the war. Ali's reason why he doesn’t want to fight is that he is a devout Muslim and this would disgrace his religion for killing Vietnamese people who are fighting for their freedom.
