Many times in life, we have to make decisions that are influenced by people in our lives. We feel pressured to listen to them, when sometimes they aren’t always right. A topic that shows this a lot is loyalty vs morality. Sometimes, people want to defend someone just because they know them. If they have been with us for a long time, people get very defensive, because oftentimes, one must pick what they want to do. In the book All American Boys, by Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kelly, Quinn was pressured to be loyal, when he knew what was morally right. Quinn was under too much pressure from his family and friends to be loyal to Paul, because Paul supported Quinn, so Paul is now expecting the same respect when he made a mistake with Rashad. Quinn’s mom has a very strong opinion of loyalty, so she was more mad that Quinn wasn't loyal to her, by lying, rather than the fact that her son was drinking. “I'm sorry, but my brother did the right thing. He has to make tough calls. I'm sorry they're friends with the guy but what are you going to do?...”(221) This was said by Guzzo, Paul's brother, Guzzo is trying to force Quinn into thinking what Paul did was right, showing the idea between loyalty versus morality.
