Former New York Jets Football Coach Lou Holtz Once said that “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” This concept does not just apply to how one motivates himself, but rather how a team or organization is motivated as well. A major concept in the field of Organizational Behaviour is how exactly, is the best (or rather most effective) method of motivating a team. When this central question is applied to the unique atmosphere of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC), a unique set of problems arises in regards to work motivation. An example of this would be the inability to increase pay despite the benefits outlined Maslow and Alderfer’s Theories of Needs, wherein individuals with “strong lower-level” needs would benefit from the prospect of a pay increase. As it has been noted above there are various approaches to motivate a group, such as job enrichment and MBO, however much like everything in life there is not one particular answer to such a diverse problem. In essence a combination of approaches must be used for the task at hand. Ultimately, the success of an organization in the motivation of its employees and managers stems from its ability to select the proper theory (or theories) of motivation that will best suit the objectives of the organization through careful diagnoses of its employees, as well as using a variety of motivators in combination in order to motivate all members of the organization. This statement is not only true for companies around the world, but also for the ensuring of the motivation and efficiency of all cadets of the Royal Military College of Canada, be them a member of the “Top Five” of the Cadet Wing, or a simple first year
