Looking back at all the previous school years, all the subjects that were introduced, all that information, and how much of it did we actually learn? Are you memorizing the information or learning it? The majority of students tend to memorize the material because they wait until the last minute to complete their assignments or study. There are times where memorizing can be successful, but you can’t always rely on it. Learning however will make problem solving easier in the future and will have a long-term effect. Based on past experience I believe that students aren’t learning enough in school and that memorizing has become a problem. Students have become good at memorizing to get by, but is it fair for those who are trying to learn the information. Before my exams I would attempt to memorize all the material in a short amount of time, however the day of the test I couldn’t recall the majority of it. To help solve this problem a process called “deeper learning,” fusing content knowledge with real-world situations, is brought up. Not only will students receive a higher education but they will also be more successful in the modern world. The skills that are to be developed from this process are thinking and reasoning, managing behavior and emotions, and the ability to articulate ideas and communicate properly. Darling- Hammonds states that by using this process students preform better on achievements test and on assessments with more complex understanding. Instead of learning information straight out of the text book teachers would put students in groups after lessons for them to interact and share their ideas and thoughts with each other. Connecting the students with information will keep them more engaged rather than flipping through
