In the novel “The Wave”, an experiment is created by Mr. Ross that leads to the creation of many hardships between the characters. The uprising of the organization results in various cases of students getting injured, due to contrary beliefs. The Wave provoked the students to make irrational decisions unconsciously; These decisions teach the readers that it’s indeed possible for history to repeat itself. Throughout the course of the novel, we can observe how the characters interactions become less jovial. Relationships become weakened and eventually are destroyed, due to the heavily dense propaganda circulating the school. Laurie’s relationship with her friend Amy also spirals down, since The Wave made Amy betray her. The quote “The only reason you’re against The Wave is because it means you’re not a princess anymore.” to convey that she’s envious of the perfect life that Laurie lives. Amy has always competed to become like Laurie; however, the birth of The Wave has caused her to feel equal in social status. Moreover, she felt infuriated that Laurie wanted to bring the experiment to a halt. This creates an unfortunate tension within their friendship all thanks to The Wave. The central message that is obtained is that we shouldn’t replicate events from history; It can lead to making regrettable choices. For instance, following the beliefs of Mr. Ross (“the dictator”) has caused a sophomore to get attacked and get named a “dirty Jew”. This is repeating history, since students are blindly behaving without hesitating in response to a corrupt system. Similarly, a student anonymously sent a message to Laurie stating, “He said if I didn’t join soon it would be too late. All I want to know is: Too late for what?” to display that members of The Wave are responding to outsiders with negative remarks. The students will take any drastic measures in order to maintain the unity
