Growing up in the 1980s, Mr Tan lived in Chinatown where he was younger. Chinatown was a place where there are quite a few gambling dens and there was easy access to drugs like opium and heroin. At the age of 12, he roved around with the elderly and that was when he was first introduced to drugs as the elderly asked him to smuggle it. His first trafficking conviction has resulted in him spending 5 years in the Boys’ home. Upon the release from Boys home, he still convicted numerous drug offences such as trafficking, possession and consumption of drugs such as heroin, ketamine and sleeping pills. He was behind the bar for about 28 years and went in and out for approximately 10 times. Also, he has also tried being an assistant cook for two to three years after one of his release from prison. After his last release in 2010 when he was 39 years old, he always had a lot of leisure time on his hand after his countless rejections in finding a job. He then landed his first job as a cleaner at Hougang Swimming Pool complex after a lifeguard in the swimming complex approached him as he was curious why Mr Tan that has tattoos around his upper body had so much leisure time to swim on weekdays frequently.
