This past week has been rough for the Robinson family. After a racist jury choose to make an innocent man guilty things went from bad to worse. Atticus Finch was chosen to defend Tom Robinson. This particular case was against Mayella Ewell, a white woman. As a black man Tom was already at a disadvantage.
WOW! To Kill A Mockingbird has been a popular book for many years. The reason for this is it brings out a main theme which was common back then and still happens now. The theme of racism is seen in the book mainly at Tom Robinson's trial. The Ewell family represents the pride that whites had for innocent blacks.
I believe Tom Robinson isn’t guilty. Some ways I could tell this is how he presents his case, his mannerisms, and also how his injuries can make him unable to commit the said crime. The plaintiffs and witnesses supporting them did not present their information in that way. Many of the testimonies were conducted improperly, or weren’t said confidently. Hector Tates was very contradictory, Bob Ewells was disorderly, and Mayellas was abruptly emotional.

The outcome of Tom Robinson’s trial was most certainly unfair and based on the racism in Maycomb. There was a plethora of evidence that he was not guilty in any way. There were marks of two hands’ fingers around Mayella Ewell’s neck, bruises that were mostly concentrated on the right side of her face (meaning that the attacker would be left handed as Bob Ewell was, and Tom had a crippled left arm), and the changing stories told by the each of the Ewells. Tom Robinson was accused of rape even tho the evidence made him not guilty, but if he was not guilty, why did he keep coming back to help her if he didnt want to be convicted of something he didnt do?
For example, when Tom Robinson’s court is in trial, the testimony stated that Mayella had hand marks all around her neck and a bruise on her right eye and Atticus shows how, “[Tom Robinson’s] left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side.” Tom Robinson could not have choked Mayella with both hands since he was crippled. Tom Robinson also would have trouble punching Mayella in her right eye since when using your hand, you tend to swing at the nearest target, which would have been her left eye. Furthermore, when Atticus, distraught, is speaking about Tom Robinson’s death, he states “They said if he’d had two good arms he’d have made it, he was moving that fast. Seventeen bullet holes in him” (Lee 239).
Tom Robinson is on trial for the sexual assault of a white woman also known as Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson had to experience injustice and was criticized just because he is black and black men are all “bad”. There was no proof that he actually raped Mayella, but he was accused and really innocent. At the trial, the witness said, “Mayella Ewell was hit on her right eye.” But, how could he hit her right eye when Tom’s left hand was completely impossible to use.
The United States prides itself on the principle of equality. In the Declaration of Independence, the very basis of the nation, it states "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Despite this promise, Maycomb county lacks the humanity and fairness that America promises. Not only do the whites of the county show obvious contempt for the blacks, but they are willing to go as far as to murder one, Tom Robinson, in cold blood, depriving him of the basic right promised by our great country. In my opinion from reading the conviction of Hiawatha Robinson case, I honestly think that he was guilty of the murder of his 8- year old daughter Hiawayi. The FBI and police had gathered so much information on Hiawatha that they could finally charge him of 1st degree murder of his daughter. The FBI had fingerprints, phone records, and even witnesses saying that Hiawatha was the last person to see his daughter alive. To murder your own daughter I think you have to be heartless and evil, especially a child he age of eight. Everyone expects Robinson to be sentenced to life in prison, meaning if he was eligible for parole he would get it after spending 24 years in prison first.
In the news today, the biggest things are the killings of African Americans like Mike Brown, and Eric Gardner; and how their lives didn’t matter because they are black. In a novel written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is accused of raping a nineteen year old girl, and he is given an unfair trial just because of his skin color. Depending on what kind of situation someone is in, their character and personality are going to change. Most people are just going to want to finish their job and get it over with and go home, but then when they are put under pressure they snap and can’t focus. Other times they might be the most caring person out in the world, and is trying to help people out.
