In the previous chapter soon after they find other presents in the tree, they realize the knothole in the tree has been filled up with cement. When Jem asks Mr. Nathan Radley why he filled the whole he told Jem it was because the tree was dying. He later asks Atticus if he thought the tree was dying and that’s when he said the tree seemed healthy to him. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Scout states, that Jem stood outside until the night came upon them while she waited for him. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout and Jem both live in Maycomb, Alabama with their dad Atticus. They also meet their friend Dill who visits every summer. In the end of the book Jem and Scout are on their way home back from their school halloween pageant, then they get suddenly attacked by Bob Ewell. Then suddenly a stranger jumps in and is able to fight off Bob by stabbing him, and it turns out the stranger was Boo Radley. Jem suffered a broken arm from the fight and is knocked unconscious.
He first put a piece of gum in the hole. Scout was the one to notice it first. So she told Jem and Jem never really believe her until they found more gifts in it, like two Indian Head pennies or two soaps with a girl and boy carved into them. Jem and Scout wrote a letter to the person leaving them these wonderful gifts, but they couldn’t put the letter in the hole because Nathan Radley poured cement in the hole to stop the exchanges of gifts. That was one way Boo cared for Jem and Scout or created that father/children relationship.
In Chapter 4 of To Kill a Mockingbird Jem and Scout find several things in the knot-hole of the old oak tree on the Radley house. The children are very curious about who left these things there. Later in the book they realize that it is Boo Radley is leaving the gifts. He is trying to show them his affection for them. Jem had to lost his pants the day before when Scout, Dill, and himself had gone up to the radley house while they were there Mr.Radley almost shot them. The cause of this is Mr. Nathan Radley filling the tree, where Jem and Scout continuously find little gifts, with concrete. Mr. Nathan Radley’s reason for filling the tree is that the tree is dying. When Jem gets home he asks Atticus, “Is that tree dyin’?” (84) and Atticus tells Jem he does not believe that it is. Later in the evening, Jem cries to himself realizing that not all adults will tell the truth like Atticus.
•Some evidence that Jem is beginning to understand more than Scout about Boo Radley was when Jem infers that the things that they found in the tree are ways to communicate for Boo Radley, since he couldn't get out of the house. He understands enough that it was Boo Radley sending them the gifts that he proposed a letter of thanks to him, but was prevented from doing so. Jem then waits on the porch, trying to piece the clues together, and when he talked to Nathan Radley, Mr. Radley said that he clogged up the tree, saying that it was dying and he needed to put cement in it. However, the tree was alive and healthy, which made Jem suspicious of his statement. •Does Jem still fear the gifts in the tree?

The three of them sneak behind the Radley house but they see a shape of a man on the back porch and run. Right after they start to run a shotgun fires behind him. All three of them then ducked under the Radley fence and Jem’s pants got caught.
