Jackie Robinson was the first African American to “break baseball’s color barrier” and play as a part of a white league. Robinson stepped out if the negro leagues to play for the all-white Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the first black person to play in Major League Baseball. There were, of course, obstacles. People were racist to him because most of the country was segregated, and Robinson faced rejection from players from other teams, their team owners, bigoted white fans, and even his own teammates.
Of the hundreds of boxers to have been a world champion at some point, none have held the title as long as Joe Louis did. For 11 years and 8 months, Louis, a black man, was king of the boxing heavyweight division. During that time he beat a Nazi, enlisted in the army, and did everything he possibly could to familiarize white America with black boxers. During his career, Joe Louis used his boxing prowess and earned wealth to fight against the segregation and racism he experienced, leading him to have one of the greatest boxing careers of all time and to pioneer a pathway for the careers of other black athletes like Jackie Robinson and Muhammed Ali.

Georgia was a place where racism and oppression was very prevalent and it made life very difficult for the Robinson family. What made life even harder was that Jerry Robinson, Jackie’s father, ran away from home and left Jackie’s mother, Mallie, with five children and almost no money (Robinson 4). Jackie was determined to help his mother in any way possible.
