Multicultural Literature and Diversity Issues
One thing students of all ages seem to have in common is their lack of interest when it comes to reading. Students have a hard time involving themselves with literature or anything that involves reading and it’s not a problem that is seen only in the classrooms. This literature crisis also seems to affect their own personal reading engagement. Students are not reading in schools or for their own personal enjoyment, which raises the question as to why this is happening? Students are not getting any enjoyment of the reading material they encounter in schools, and one of the main reasons why is because they don’t relate to the material. More often than not, there is absolutely no diversity when it comes to school texts. For students to finally appreciate and relate to not only school texts, but also class lectures as a whole, teachers should incorporate multiculturalism in their classroom.

According to O’Byrne and Smith (2015), preservice teacher programs should teach their student teachers how to survey the way their students respond to multicultural education to help them modify their curriculum to have a positive result (p. 169). Integrating multicultural education, especially multicultural literacy, could benefit students that come from culturally diverse backgrounds. This would be a huge step in finally helping students meet their needs and finally being able to relate to what is being presented in the classroom.
