Multicultural Setting You may be coming from a culture of similarity, but what do you do when your classroom becomes a multicultural in a foreign setting? Multicultural education is an approach involving social justice and equality. There are several aspects of a multicultural classroom. What is required is a set of components all working together to form a well-balanced classroom. These components involve empowering students and school culture, reducing prejudice, and integration. In a global marketplace, adults need to understand their interaction with those who may appear to be different thereby reducing conflicts. As we discussed in a previous section, be aware of your biases. It is essential to understand your biases regarding values, cultural beliefs when considering multiculturalism in your classroom. You must be aware by now that working in another country, you possess some interest in immigrating to that specific area of the world, but be aware of their values and traditions, their style of communicating, how they contribute to society, learning preference, and professional relationships with your students. Reading about some other culture can get you so far, but not as far as actual interaction with your students. The question is then, what does this all have to do with a multicultural classroom? Discovering or learning about the students cultural patterns of a cultural group is to understand that just because you are there to teach them one thing does not necessary mean it will be interpreted well in a cultural that is already entrenched in culture and customs. Essentially, you may expect your students to adapt to a Western norm and adjust their behaviors and attitudes when the opposite is true, you need to adjust your attitude and behavior to adapt to a multicultural classroom (Personal values, beliefs, and attitudes,
