Media's Tactics for their Islamophobic Coverage When media tries to make their coverage negative and prejudiced against not only Muslim extremists but also ordinary Muslim people, media uses some tactics such as distortion, omission and creation so that they can make their prejudice take form and spread.
Firstly, as for an example for distortion, on December 11th, 2005, in Sydney, Australia, the Cronulla Race Riot, which is "racial violence broke out in the usually tranquil beach suburb of Cronulla, with attacks directed towards those of Middle Eastern appearance" occurred (Lieu). During the riot, two Muslim boys who were Lebanese origin were chased and assaulted by at least five thousand "White Australians" at the local beach (Hassan). …show more content…

On September 10th, 2015, a video was released by Fox and Friends, which was one of the channels of the American big news television channel Fox News. It was after the president Obama told that the United States was going to accept more refugees, and what was shown in the video was a scene in which a lot of refugees were trying to get on a train (Arrowood). The refugees seemingly were Muslim, as they repeated "Allahu Akbar", meaning "God is great" in Arabic. A woman speaking in the news used a phrase "potential terrorists" in order to describe the refugees (Arrowood). Moreover, on the screen, a graphic "Terrorists Inbound? Taking Refugees Could Open Door To Jihadists" was shown (Arrowood). Though she told that they did not mean that there are terrorists in them, basically this coverage was saying there was a possibility that terrorists were in the refugees and encouraging islamophobia. In this case, media was trying to create a wrong news so that people would be more islamophobic. However, actually, there is few possibility that terrorists are in the refugees. "Since 9/11, the U.S. has admitted 784,000 refugees into the country", and "during that time, exactly three refugees were found to have links to terrorism".
