Nursing Experience
I graduated in 2016, with my bachelor of science in nursing from Concordia University Wisconsin. I have been a nurse for two years. I started my nursing career off as a psychiatric nurse at Rogers memorial hospital on a dual mental health and detox adult unit. I have been floated to the following units: children psychiatric, eating disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, dual diagnoses, depression/ mood disorder and residential. While continuing to work at Rogers memorial, I become a RN case manager at Horizon home care in 2016. It is important as a nurse practitioner to recognized normal and abnormal labs to diagnose patients. I also perform home dialysis, wound vacums, pleurx catheters, urinary catheters, remove urethral stents, IV antibiotic administration and ostomy care all in the comfort of patients homes. I have supervised eight nursing students on a psychiatric floor. I have coordinated with the clinical director and nurses at the clinical site to make student patient assignments. The skill of leadership will also benefit me in my APN role.
Nurse practitioners need to possess leadership skills, education skills, disease management, and procedural skills. I believe that my skills in my nursing profession has prepared me to enter the nurse practitioner program with confidence. The education that I have received at Concordia university Wisconsin in the BSN and working career has prepared me to further my career as a nurse practitioner student. According to the Concordia University handbook (2018), “You need to demonstrate participation in patient care encounters across the lifespan from birth to old age”. The types of patients I will be seeing are from birth to old age, both male and female. One of my clinical sites is for homeless people. In this site I will manage pediatrics, adolescents, adults, elderly, men, women, obstetrics and patients with low socioeconomic status. I have a women’s health clinical site at planned parenthood in the inner city of Milwaukee. I will be taking care of males and females from teenage years (with consent) to adults. I also have a pediatric clinical site, I will only see pediatric patients age ranging from 0 to 18 years old. At my other clinical locations, I will take care of patients with acute, chronic, simple and complex illnesses. I will treat but not limited to: ear infection, sore throats, kidney failure, hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, dermatology, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, factures, infections, wounds, thyroid disease, coronary artery disease and
