My Nursing Philosophy Essay

Over the past five years my philosophy of nursing has changed and evolved. Previously I had included components of advocacy, the importance of the healthcare team, and the evolving nature of nursing. The BSN program’s philosophy and mission is “guided by the Franciscan Values, the University of Saint Francis nursing education experience serves as a foundation for lifelong learning” (Division of nursing: BSN student handbook, 2023, p. 11). This philosophy has been instilled in me from the moment I started classes in the nursing program at the University of Saint Francis. The philosophy has helped me to become a better learner and nurse. Nursing is the “response to the needs of individuals, groups, and communities across the life span in a variety of settings” (Division of nursing: BSN student handbook, 2023, p. 11). The nursing program at the University of Saint Francis has reinforced this in me through the curriculum used. We have different views that will define nursing based on our experiences. I previously defined nursing via the American Nursing Association. Nursing “is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response; and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, and populations” (American Nurses Association, n.d.). I still believe nursing can be defined as this. The only change is the increase in my knowledge as I continue to grow as a nurse. As nurses we are there for patients at all times. Other members of the healthcare team are there to support the patients but nurses are there around the clock. Nurses help with all aspects of health, which includes diagnosing, treating, and advocating for various health problems that patients might
