Goodwin’s article provides groupings of ceremonials between the Apache and Navaho, according to their function and origin. Certain ceremonials may be used to cure, make things right (i.e. tension within the tribe), ward off evil, or to gain other rites. For instance, during a Navaho “Lifeway” ceremony the ritual’s focus is used for bodily injury, while an Apache ceremony may be carried out by one ritual pattern, not for curing but for the dispelling of ghosts.
