Slide 1 Cold War Task 5 By: Cristina Prince Slide 2 The Soviet Union and the United States rose as superpowers, and the world progressed towards bipolar politics, a state in which two rather equally matched sides confronted one another. The United States strengthened much of Europe through the Marshall Plan, giving $12 billion dollars in aid to Western Europe after WWII. Resulting in implementing of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a defense agreement meant to organize opposition to the Soviet Union and China, both politically and militarily.
As tensions grew between the Eastern Bloc and the Western Bloc, NATO, a military alliance was formed to counteract the threat that the Soviet Union provided in 1949. Canada was one of the main contributors to the creation of the alliance, and played a major role in upholding the alliance and assisting in power struggles during the Cold War era. NATO was especially important to Canada due to the political ties, military assistance, and ideologies that Canada had that aligned with NATO. A notable Canadian figure during this era was Lester B. Pearson due to his contributions to the alliance. He has assisted in struggles such as the Suez Crisis as well as repairing relations between America and Canada through the Bomarc Missile Crisis.

Alliances were formed to provide security and maintain peace but tensions about the possibility of war only intensified. For example, the United States other countries joined to form NATO in 1949 to rely on each other for security if the Soviets attack (Document 4). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was to specifically protect allied countries from Soviet attacks. To counteract this, the Soviets made the Warsaw Pact in 1955 (Document 8). The countries allied with the Soviets were mostly from the Soviet bloc or the eastern side of the iron curtain.
In the context of the Cold War, the fight for power and the establishment of the strongest nation were reflected over several ambits, one of them being the capacity of armament or military power of the nation. Therefore, the military-industrial complex is not only exhibited on the foreign relationships among nations, but the growth of the military power itself. For instance, after World War II ended, the United States, as the strongest nation in military power due to the drop of the two nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the war, decided to keep short the Soviet Union and stop the spreading of the communist ideas, not only in their own nation, but to keep it from spreading in Europe and Asia. And by doing so, the United States needed to create military alliances with smaller nations, offer them protection from external threats, and secure them with an increase in weaponry. So, the United States needed to expand their own military and weaponry industry, thus applying the concept of military-industry complex, where the government increased the investment for national defense and arms production.
Although the US’s action is seen to benefit them in most ways, their recognition of the crisis and effort to help should be gone unnoticed. The US seen as a great opposer of the communist regime and throughout history has helped many nation fight for their freedom. They had helped the non-communist Koreans free themselves from their brainwashed Koreans and Afghan people from culture stripping Soviet. The United States and the West used these actions as justification for further aggression, even though they were simply a response to their provocations. The moves by the Soviets intensified fears in Congress and led to the United States expanding federal power through agencies like the National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency. It also led to them solidifying their influence over the Western Hemisphere by joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Organization of American States. The Soviets once again became threatened and formed the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance in Eastern Europe, in response. President Truman continued to view

took leadership in putting an end to communism through alliances. The North Atlantic Treaty created a pact between the U.S. and the North Atlantic Area to fight against the communist countries (Document D). This states that any country under this treaty will support the defending country in any way possible during an armed attack. None of these countries would be singled out by any kind of Soviet attack because it would be the Soviet Union against all the countries under the Treaty. In this treaty, the Security Council took some power in making sure that attacks were reported to them so that they could resolve these issues.
The Cold War wasn’t really much a war with large scale fighting between the two sides, the United Sates and the Soviet Union. The war started in 1947 and ended around 1991. The United States saw that The Soviet Union was a trying to spread communism and this was a threat to their effort on trying to let the Eastern Europe countries capitalist countries. The United States formed NATO with other countries to create a protective alliance system. This caused a worry to the Soviet Union, a threat to their security.
Soon, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. The establishment of this document further ensured that the spread of communism would not be tolerated, as the nation's associated with this treaty will protect themselves from possible
From 1945 to 1982, Canada looked to become not only trustworthy trading partners with the U.S, but trustworthy military collaborates with them. With the commencement of the Cold War, both Canada and the United States had to stop, control, and protect the North Atlantic Community from soviet attacks and the spread of communism. A way in which Canada and the United States strengthened their relations during the Cold War was through NATO. Since “The USSR pursued a policy of aggressive military expansion at home and subversion abroad,” the United States and Canada feared Soviets would impose communism on countries such as France, Italy, and Germany. As a result, a military alliance called NATO created between Canada, the United States, Britain,
Foreign Policy is the way a nations government manages with different countries to accomplish their countries goal. This artifact shows the 12 nations which founded this organization including Canada. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, made in 1949, was Canada's first peacetime military collusion, putting the country in a protective security agreement plan with the United States, Britain and the countries of western Europe. Amid the Cold War, NATO strengths gave a front line discouragement against the Soviet Union and its satellite states. NATO is important for the reason that it was formed to antithetic any Soviet Union threats during the Cold War time period.
