Although I practiced all the focused review tests, but I need to read and understand the questions to be able to choose the best option in subsequent tests. I also studied my lecture notes and textbook. The areas for improvement in the categories below are addressed. The requirement of taking the NCLEX-RN is completing an approved nursing educational program follows the guideline and regulation established by the board of nursing (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2018). American Association of College of Nursing (2008) provides a framework for establishing a baccalaureate nursing program which comprises the expectation for coursework and clinical experience. Clinical experience is critical in nursing training for preparing the trainee to provide care to “a variety of patient across the lifespan and across the continuum of care” (American Association of College of Nursing, 2008, p. 33). Although the required clinical training hour is varied in each nursing program, it is essential and mandatory for all the curriculum. According to the curriculum for a four-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from The University of Kansas School of Nursing, student has to have 687 hours of clinical and laboratory experience before graduation (The University of Kansas Medical Center, 2018).
In January of 2008, I began my LPN education at Fortis College. I worked diligently to maintain a 4.0 throughout nursing school; and accordingly, I was the class valedictorian. Passing the NCLEX exam in the summer of 2009 was my greatest accomplishment thus far. My education at Fortis included I.V. certification as well as CPR certification for medical professionals. Gaining my first nursing job was a challenge because almost every employer requires experience.
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. It is very important to understand each aspect of this model because it is the core of how we develop our nursing knowledge while transitioning from student
Before considering if this career will be great, high school subjects matter. According to Nurse Practitioner Schools, some high school subjects need to be excelled such as anatomy, psychology, chemistry, biology, and statistics. References matter, most importantly from supervisors, professors, mentors, and even from volunteering at a local hospital. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, a NCLEX-RN needs to be accomplished. NCLEX-RN stands for, National Council Licensure Examination for Registered nurse and must be completed by RNs as well.
The nursing profession encompasses not only different levels of licensed nurses but also different scopes and skills. The four main nursing roles include; member of the profession, provider of the patient-centered care, patient safety advocate and member of the health care team (Texas Board of Nursing [TBON], 2011). Additionally, there are 25 core competencies that fall under the four nursing roles that are further explained into more specific expectations in clinical judgements, behaviors and competency (TBON, 2011). The competencies are written to guide nursing school curriculums accordingly and to provide a foundation of education to be carried out in all programs (TBON, 2011).
This organization greatly impacts nursing practice because it is through this organization that nurse excellence and nurse leaders are created. Moreover, the organization plays a significant role in nursing research as they are constantly conducting research and studies toward improving quality of patient care. AACN serves as advocates for nurses in ensuring that they are ready and well equipped through their skills and knowledge to care for the general population. AACN continuously finds ways to improve nursing competency through ways like ensuring nurses are knowledgeable of health policy (Arabi, Rafii, Cheraghi, & Ghiyasvandian, 2014). As a nurse, it would strongly support this organization as they help innovate the future not just for nurses but also for the entre healthcare field.
Introduction: Sociologist Ernest Burgess had an interesting theory about urban growth which is called the Burgess model. It was a concentric model by which a city pushed out towards the edges. As each new inhabitants moved into an area the other inhabitants were pushed out and therefore settled new zone, there were five zones according to his model (Little et al., 2014, p.622) . 1.
The advancement in medical science, technology and complexity of the current patient care, demands the nurses to be prepared with the knowledge and skills in Assessment and Intervention, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Patient Relationship, Leadership, Management and Teaching. As the required competency increases, the curriculum needs to prepare the nursing graduates to have these core competencies as outlined by COPA model (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment)” (Lenburg, 1999 a, b). The BSN curriculum is tailored to accommodate these professional development requirements, the modern era demands that incorporate a broad scope of practice, giving a better edge in competency compared to an ADN, especially in Critical Thinking. A noteworthy point is that the differences in clinical competencies of a BSN and ADN are few compared to management, leadership, decision making and communication competencies.
Nurses need the ability of fast critical thinking skills and observation of declining signs and symptoms. Nurses also must have the ability to educate
Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.
