I am writing to you in support of Toye Adefioye. Toye Adefioye shadowed me at Daughters of Miriam, a skilled nursing facility in Clifton, New Jersey, from 08/2013 to 06/2014 for over 1500 hours. Toye observed me while I provide therapy to patients of various diagnoses; diagnoses such as general orthopedic, neurological, cardiovascular, wound management, geriatrics, and so on. During this time, He was able to recognize and differentiate facts, and distinguish relevant from irrelevant information.
This was where I first developed my multitasking skills to oversee and coordinate four clinical research studies. My strong communication and interpersonal skills enabled me to meet crucial deadlines and work efficiently with physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical sponsors, and study monitors. I strive not only to be a great employee and team player but also to serve and positively impact my community, especially the medically underserved. For more than five years, I have volunteered over 1,000 hours, and most recently, I serve through the Lestonnac Free Clinic and Access OC organization as a Spanish interpreter. As a bilingual Spanish-speaking nurse, I hope to help my community by breaking down the language barrier between patients and the healthcare team in order to ensure the accurate continuity of care.
Hi Deadre, I highly appreciate your post, and I have a deeper appreciation of RMU OTD program that promote professional development at the highest caliber and integrity. At this point in the program, I have to use the knowledge acquired to change our profession. I have also gained confidence in my practice secondary to using evidence based. I concur with you that the CIPD framework is a great tool that helps with organization skills that helps to produce evidence based finished products to promote the centennial vision. Furthermore, with RMU professors have equipped us with incredible knowledge that prompts us to be active leaders in occupational therapy profession, and eradicate passivity to make our profession powerful.
The MEPN program prioritizes this, which aligns with my future goals in my own nursing practice. One of my key goals is to advance and deepen my skills in research to better confront issues affecting local, national, and global populations. Throughout my college career, I have immersed myself in diverse experiences to broaden my understanding of different perspectives and backgrounds. Serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) for the past three years has been a pivotal example. As an RA, I had the opportunity to interact with individuals from all backgrounds while managing many responsibilities.
The evaluation is the final part of my three mandatory written pieces of my graded unit. The final evaluation stage of the graded unit requires me to reflect on how the activity went, whilst highlighting my strengths, areas that require future development and identify my weaknesses, this, in turn, will enable me to adapt my practice to ensure I am continuously supporting patients to the standards set within The Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC). Looking back on the activity, I am proud of myself for being able to plan and follow the activity through to complication. When completing the book with Mr X I found it to be an enjoyable activity that not only offered benefits to Mr X but also to myself, it allowed me to understand the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with a patient. Building a successful therapeutic relationship required me to have good communication and interpersonal skills, (Radcliffe and Ford, 2015), that allowed me to build a relationship with Mr X based on mutual trust and respect.
A large draw for me is the longitudinal integrated clerkship as well. The new curriculum strongly fits my learning style and interest in forming long-term relationships with patients and preceptors. The
This learning actively greatly assisted in building my confidence, which I required in order to be successful in the new graduate RN role. Good collaborative working relationships are based on clear communication and collaboration with the patient and all members of the healthcare team. (Kieft, et al. 2014 ) This semester I had no issues with regards to speaking with physicians and other members of the healthcare team, and I continued to actively participated and contributed to daily rounds on all 3 critical care units.
All of these topics are essential for an individual reviewing the RN’s profile, because they give the interviewer a basic generalization of a possible candidate for their position. The interviewer can get a good grasp on how long an individual stays at a job, what specialty of nursing they’ve been in, where they went to school, years of experience and why they wanted to go into nursing in the first place. All these descriptions about an individual will lay down the foundation for an interviewer to get know the RN. Next, I would like to discuss the importance for clinical experience to be included in the portfolio. The Clinical experience essentially displays to an interviewer how well a RN documents, how they performed during clinical and how they took care of their patient.
There are many benefits to the Insite program but I believe that the rehabilitation that is provided, is the most significant in terms of improving the lives of people with addiction. The reason that I think this is the most important is that it is the first step on the road to recovery. At Insite they provide support given by former addicts which is beneficial. This is important for people with addictions, because they will be able to connect with individuals who have struggled with similar issues.
Additionally, this experience helped me to develop effective therapeutic communication techniques and enforce skills to provide enhanced care for the resident. An improvement that I would make for next semester is to improve my execution and time management while performing tasks. I intend to perform skills with greater confidence and improve my overall interactions with the patients, families, and health care workers. Improving these interactions will benefit in the overall comfort of the patient and improve the care that I will provide to them. Overall, this Long Term Care experience provided me with the necessary fundamental skills practice and critical thinking development that will be utilized in the following semesters and throughout my nursing
For instance, it was interesting to be able to see and work within the different dynamics of the nursing profession. In the OR and endoscopy unit I noticed that the nurses seemed much more relaxed than those on the medical or surgical floor. I felt as though they had copious amounts of time to educate on the different procedures and different pieces of the specialty areas, while allowing me plenty of time to ask questions to broaden my knowledge. All this education has provided me with the abilities, knowledge, strengths, work ethics to be a proud and efficient professional working in the competitive nursing field. The BSN program has provided me with new knowledge and new skills, that have helped me to evolve into a more competent and professional nurse with stronger nursing knowledge, ethics, and moral values. Each course that I took during the BSN program was a new opportunity to strengthen my knowledge, ability to do research, and critical thinking skills expanding my knowledge and making me feel confident of my abilities to work as an important part of an interdisciplinary team. As I reflect on the past 15 months of attending CCU. I recall the excitement, and the overwhelming stress of having to work full time and attend online college. I was not sure that I could complete my degree at fifty years old. Because of being out of school for over 30 years. I was somewhat reluctant to give it a try.
I was able to create better therapeutic communication skills, pick up on the patient’s ticks, learn how to assess for triggers, etc. I will use this in the future because I will come in contact with patients who suffer from a mental illness on any floor I work on. They may not as serious as some of the patients I worked with on this clinical rotation, however, it is still important, as a nurse, to recognize and address mental health issues with patients. I also learned just how important self-care for nurses is. It doesn’t take long for nurses to begin to feel burnt out and lose passion in what they do.
