Child labor is a broad term that describes all employment of those under the age of 14. This has caused an issue in recent times, where many are pressuring major companies to stop allowing children to join their workforce because it is seen as wrong in their culture. Child labor should continue because most of the time it is performed out of necessity, it is not inherently dangerous, and while some may argue that children are deprived of their education while employed, they are learning practical skills and supporting their families at the same time.
Many children do work in order to provide for their impoverished families, where it is necessary for them to bring in extra income. Without the children working, it would make it difficult for them and their families to survive. It is the job of the corporations that employ the children to uphold to rules and regulations just as it is for regular workers. Early employment should rather be seen as an opportunity of sorts for the children that want to learn practical skills. As stated by Nadira Faulmuller, “What childhood is and what it should consist of is a social construct to some extent. This construction highly differs between countries and across time.” The ideology that in childhood, one should not have to work is something specific to one’s culture. For example, many kids work alongside their parents in chinese restaurants, because it is their culture to do so (Faulmuller).
