My current event article is from the New York Times and is titled, A Culture of Nagging Helps California Save Water. This article coincides closest with chapter one in our book, entitled, Environmental Problems, Their Causes, and Sustainability. I picked this article because I like the idea of a great number of people coming together to help our environment in a pretty small amount of time to keep the place they call home from danger. I also liked how it displayed our ability to want to be more environmentally friendly or helpful when faced with the fear of being scolded or ridiculed by our peers. Now, people are being pressured into taking shorter showers, running their faucets less when brushing their teeth, and use less water in irrigating their agriculture. Along with this positive change in water use, public safety advocates have said that greater use of seat belts, and a drop in drunken driving episodes nationwide, can be traced in part to friends and family scolding offenders. This is all due to this fear of being nagged or ridiculed by your friends or family for not doing the right thing. On the bright side, some can see this as a learning experience in how our county's over consumption can really hurt us if we don't make a change in time. Some can also look at this and see how the willingness to nudge one another could change the collective mind-set toward a wanting to help. Either way I feel we can see how people today are more easily persuaded to do good and help the environment when they are faced with the fear of being nagged to by their family and friends rather than helping out because it is the right thing to do. Whether or not this is a positive attribute morally is debatable, but in any case we can say that California has been able to change this much none the less. All I can hope is that this same strategy can be implemented in other places in our country or the world to try and stop other problems our environment is faced with
