The story of Romeo and Juliet is the story of two star crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet’s love is hidden because they are forbidden to date as they are from the two opposing houses in Verona; Capulet’s and Montague’s. Names are important in this tragedy as the reason there was so much tragedy is based on the two teenagers having to hide their love from everyone and the weight that responsibility bared on them. In this play names divide characters and define people as well as they divide the city in two based on your last name. In act 1, the hatred for the opposing families is quite clear, especially with Tybalt, who throughout the play, is the most vocal about his hatred and the clear division between the two families. In Act 1, Scene 1 when he enters the scene, he immediately wants to fight with Benvolio and when Benvolio wants to stop the quarrel and keep the peace Tybalt says “What, drawn, and talk of peace! In addition Juliet is arranged to marry County Paris because of his good name and his good reputation and not because of who he really is, which contradicts the point Shakespeare makes when he shows that both Juliet and Romeo don’t care about each other's last names because it does show that a name defines a person and their
