Former Republican Presidential Nominee, Dr. Ben Carson is a 64 year old male with a preliminary diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder with indicators for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Manic Disorder. His history and current presentation of was examined through personal interviews and writings as well as observations. A 60-item online mental health assessment was also utilized to determine the presence of a disorder. Research was reviewed which explored the relation between history, success and the development of narcissistic behaviors and subsequently Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Ben has experienced symptoms across multiple criterion for a potential positive PTSD diagnosis. Growing up as a troubled youth in the inner-city of Detroit placed Ben in a position to witness many tragic events happening to those around him. Ben Carson has a campaign history of making unorthodox, remorseless and grandiose statements that could be constituted as pseudoscientific, seemingly fabricated and potentially offensive. Within the medical community, Dr. Carson is revered as a brilliant mind, an innovator and a revolutionary to say the least. In his past, he has been commended for taking on medical cases that were thought to be “risky” or hopeless. He has also revived surgical methods that were previously abandoned. Being unorthodox and having grandiose thought patterning had yielded enormous success for Dr. Carson. An associated level of confidence is to be expected but at some point during his formative time, Dr. Carson’s functioning shifted to maladaptive behaviors and thoughts of superiority and grandiosity. Earlier research highlighted the difficulty associated with diagnosing narcissistic personality disorders, as its presentation may not be evident at first glance. After further investigation regarding the motivation behind Dr. Carson’s public missteps, the presence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and subsequent secondary disorders have strong supporting evidence.
