On September 11, 2001, terrorist hijacked four airliners and attacked the United States. The attackers were from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Two of the planes flew into the World Trade Center’s skyscrapers in New York City, a third hit the Pentagon near Washington D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. A year before 9/11, a number of terrorist came to the United States to receive training by our people. The attacks resulted in the loss of thousands of people, firefighters, and police officers. The impact of the two World Trade Center towers caused the buildings to catch on fire and collapse. I remember being in the fifth grade as teachers took students to the library to watch the news about what was happening. There were numerous of people jumping out of the buildings and people screaming as debris fell from hundreds of feet above them. Our teachers began to freak out because of what the children were observing. I also remember parents picking up their children, out of fear for what might happen next, my parents included. When we left the school my parents remained quiet about the situation, I believe they felt it would keep my brothers and me safe if we were unaware. Furthermore, parents were so frantic that it took weeks before some students returned to school. It’s hard for such a horrible catastrophe to have an impact on someone who is only ten years old. However, watching movies and reading articles as an adult puts things into perspective. When I think back on September 11th I feel like it was a dream because I was so young. I’m thankful I was a child, as I didn’t really know what was happening. It’s alarming learning how cruel people are, and knowing at any moment our lives can change. Thousands of people, innocent people, died that day, and it makes my heart break knowing we couldn’t stop the terrorist before they attacked. As an adult I thank our soldiers, firefighters, EMT’s, and any other brave comrade for trying to save and protect our people. I admire the people
