When I became a high school freshman, one club I joined was band dancing. It was such a big thing for the whole school, especially the marching band, football, and boys’ basketball. Band dancing is a group of 8-10 girls, including the captain, and it is very intense. The band dancers have the responsibility of being the face of the band whether it is marching, or being in the stands. The way the dancers carry themselves displays the attitude and advanced level of the band. Most girls who are excellent in band dancing typically go to a college that has the program, and in some occasions can receive a scholarship to an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). We stood at attention for the introductions, hands on waist and displaying the same attitude as if we were in the stands. “My name is Tamiya and I am a freshman”, the girl next to me shouted. I nearly laughed because she actually screamed it at the top of her lungs. It was my turn, “My name is Dominique and I am currently a freshman. I have six-months dance experience and a background of cultural diversity.” Quite a handful from a freshman, but nonetheless, they soaked it all up, including my smirk toward the end and the slight squint of my eye, implying that I am directly talking to the captain. Now it was time for the dance, but because our group was doing excellent, the captain chose the harder dance from the two. I could just hear the words to Thrift Shop by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore going on and on in my head, imagining the dances move in my head and how it was supposed to look. Also, I needed to execute each one with precision and accuracy. We lined up close to the table, backs facing the judges and stood in parade rest and waited for the song to start. “Class.Poise.Posture.Veracity. Sass” I was qualified and ready to show
