The Madison Scouts are the epitome of a marching band. The longest running “official” marching band in existence has a very long history. They however were and continue to be very successful in the drum corp world. Winning multiple world and DCI championships, The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps continues to be the only strong male Drum Corp in existence. It was in the depression year of 1938 that a group of Madison, Wisconsin, businessmen attended a Racine Scouts performance and forthwith decided that Madison needed its own drum corps.
1. As a member of the CASHS Trojan Marching Band, it has been imperative that I have been exhibiting numerous key characteristics that reinforce my dedication to the band as a whole throughout my years in such a wonderful, musical family. As part of the leadership team this past, I have strived to be an admirable role model for not only the freshmen in my section, but also the middle school band students during band night. I have never missed a football game, and oftentimes I have arrived earlier and left later than required for band events so that I could help set things up or make sure everything is cleaned up. 2.
I think marching band should be known as a sport, and it is not because I am in band myself. No, marching band is not “easy”-- it takes a lot of effort to be on the football field. It isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it also isn’t the hardest. There are many people that say “Band puts so much hard work on the field so that people could have a good halftime show.” For example, my principal, AND band director
I know I could be a Drum Major because of my passion for band and my ability to lead. Ever since I first picked up a trumpet in fifth grade, I realized that I have a passion of music. The joy of not only learning the language, but picking up a horn and playing it was an experience unmatched by anything else. Fast Forward four years to my first band camp, both nerve racking and electrifyingly exciting. While music rehearsal happened and I felt excited for the coming four years, nothing could compare to the first day of marching, taught by Anna, Connor, and Jake.
Welcome to Marching Band. “Marching band is for dorks and nerds that have nothing to do”, I used to think to myself. After all, the media has portrayed band students to be this way. How could I not think that band kids had no social life and were all geeky! It was a flaw of mine to believe the stereotypes, but after my friend constantly insisted in me trying out for the color guard, I could not say no.
It is extremely irritating when people do not recognize all the sports that are out there. Sure, there are a lot of them but if we can consider cheerleading a sport then I think that we can call marching band a sport. People do not understand why I am so easily annoyed when they diss this great sport. Marching band is the place where the intelligent students are.
Marching band; copious amounts of people scoff at the sound of those words. I often hear students commenting on how easy marching band is, how we don’t train like the football players do. At Anderson High School, that’s not the case, the marching band trains for just as long. As a band of over 125 individuals, it takes determination, pride, and confidence to achieve the goals we have set forth to accomplish. As a leader of the saxophone section, I know what it’s like to face failure, to overcome and turn it into success and to march on with confidence.
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
The sole purpose for core bands is to entertain the audience, and while that is perfectly fine and dandy, at the end of the day it has no significant meaning. Military marching bands are known to support those who have fought, or are fighting for our country. A military marching band cannot go a year without performing at a veterans day parade or being asked to preform a drill to honor veterans at a football game. It has also been very common for Military bands to march with American and Texas flags in their drill. Military bands pride themselves on representing the U.S’s armed forces.
A year ago, I signed a contract with Hillsborough marching band but I never knew what I was signing up for. The place I feel at ease is marching band practice. This is because the people there are nice. I even won an award for being the most improved rookie. Although it is tiresome I have to constantly spend around 3 hours practicing marching and playing my music every Mondays and Tuesday during summer and fall, the adrenaline rush made me more focused and on task.
Overall, one of my favorite aspects of the marching bands was the crazy dynamics in a show. A really good show will move you and make you feel like you are going through the motions of the song while a worse show will just be a song that the band is playing. I never thought about how influential the dynamics of a song could be. The movement of the dynamics mixed with the movements of the band really got me into the bands more than I think I ever have before. I couldn’t believe that some of these bands were only high school students.
I also enjoy going to the school’s band functions and listening to the music, as well as supporting my friends in band. Scouting has helped me out a lot in my schooling, as it helps me focus my energy to
Classical Music Is More than Just Classic "Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents," (Beethoven, n.d.). Music has incline a part of a soul that lives through the day. The core of music is its competency that can create an atmosphere that affects a person’s mood. Each genre of music that repose in the present is adequate to cover any kind of situation that a person is currently occupying; likewise, music can be considered as a critical tool that is able to connect intimately with people.
Band has given me tons of friends and lessons in life that I will remember and carry on with me
When I became a high school freshman, one club I joined was band dancing. It was such a big thing for the whole school, especially the marching band, football, and boys’ basketball. Band dancing is a group of 8-10 girls, including the captain, and it is very intense. The band dancers have the responsibility of being the face of the band whether it is marching, or being in the stands. The way the dancers carry themselves displays the attitude and advanced level of the band.
