In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass describes his life as a slave and everything that comes with it. You also get to follow his attempts to escape. Frederick was a major advocate for ending slavery. Obviously his main reason was because he was a slave a lot of his life, but also because he saw the pain and torture inflicted on those who were owned.
Frederick starts by talking about his childhood. Frederick was born in either 1817 or 1818. There was never a strong or accurate record of slaves being born. Most people that were born during the slavery time don’t have an exact date of birth. Frederick’s mother was Harriet Bailey. Originally his last name was Bailey also, it wasn’t until he escaped he changed his name to Douglass. A short time after Frederick was born he was taken from his mother. He mentioned that it isn’t really known why the separate the kids from their mothers. It is very common however to be taken before they are a year old. Some think it may be to hinder their affection and attachment. Frederick never knew who his father was. It was rumored however that his master, Captain Anthony, was his father. …show more content…

When he was still under the control of his master Captain so was his Aunt Hester. There was a night when Captain requested to see Hester. Captain found out that Hester had gone out and seen Ned, another slave. Captain before had told her to not see him. When Captain found out that she had disobeyed him he did what he did to anyone who disobeyed, he whipped her. Frederick saw Captain tie up Hester and whip her until she was bloody on her back. Even then he didn’t let up. Frederick could even explain how he felt during all of it. He was so scared however that he hid in a closet with the fear of him being attacked
