Nathan Hale There were many important spies in American History, but there is one spy that is skilled at information gathering. He was brave by doing things that he knew he was dangerous, but to be brave does not always mean to do things dangerous. Nathan Hale, a heroic spy, gathered information in radical ways, encouraging soldiers to fight for their country. Nathan Hale had many early life accomplishments. Nathan was born in Connecticut in the year of 1755. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Hale (Sarah). Hale was born into a family of twelve children. Nathan was the sixth child (“Revolutionary War”). He developed into an intelligent and athletic young man, after a sickly childhood (Sarah). Nathan was sent to Yale with his brother, Enoch. Hale joined the Continental Army in 1775. He received a commission as a first lieutenant. Later he was promoted to captain (Sarah). During the early army days Hale kept a journal, which listed the activities of a young officer on the siege line. In July 1755 Nathan Hale received a note from Benjamin Tallmadge, a Yale classmate. The letter inspired Hale to become an active militia member (“A Time for…”). Hale distinguished himself by volunteering to spy on the British General William Howe. Twenty-one year old, Nathan did not have formal training in intelligence gathering. “Hale posed as a Dutch schoolmaster in search for a job while he was spying on the British. Nathan’s detailed notes and drawings regarding British military positions were hidden in the soles of his shoes” (Sarah). The British captured Hale to base. Some people thought that his cousin, Samuel Hale betrayed him (Sarah). Samuel Hale was a devoted Loyalists working for the British as a deputy commissary of prisoners (“A Time for…”). Nathan Hale is an American spy who gathered information for the United
