Nationalism was a movement that spread all over Europe in the nineteenth century. The rise of nationalism in Europe seemed to mostly focus on those areas where industrialism was developed. On the other hand, countries with no industrialism, like China, did not appear to care about nationalism during that same period yet. The fact is that nationalism and industrialism have some connections with each other. In another word, changes that caused industrialism and changes were caused by industrialism led to nationalism in Europe, while there was no nationalism in China in the nineteenth century because they did not have industrialism.
Firstly, industrialism and nationalism shared some same causes. Europe had a political and social environment that allowed industrialism and nationalism. Since the Age of Enlightenment, many intellectuals changed their ideas about the world. This helped European discover more fields of sciences and develop the new sciences outside of the court. Moreover, the intellectuals from the Age of Enlightenment had raised different ideas about nation. The development of industrialism was the cause of people gathering closer together. Once the people are closed together, the government started to make new laws and build even more new constructions of industrialism to support the connections between the people as well as between the leaders and the people. Also, after Europe revolutions of 1848, “the people” gained more power. People protested to create integrated nation-states from groups of people speaking the same languages or having the same beliefs and values. In short, with newer and better technology and cultural environment, the Europeans wanted to unify to defend their countries more.
