The Chinook Indians were a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the Pacific Northwest. They lived along the coast of what is now Oregon and Washington State. The men used bow and arrows for hunting elk, deer and sea mammals. The women gathered other food such as shellfish, clams, roots and berries. The Chinook were very skilled traders.

Also many people feel that the rivalry against the Dallas Cowboy is offensive which the game is usally played on Thanksgiving Day. Many people take this as bringing of the past of the west during times where many Native Americans lost their lives. For many years Washington has had a well-respected NFL team.

Is it possible to take offense to something as simple as a team name? The Washington Redskins were originally known as the Boston Braves. When the team moved to the nation’s capital the name was changed to honor the first head coach who identified as a Sioux Indian (Leiby). Many Native Americans find the use of this name offensive and even racist while others are flattered by the mentioning of their ancestry. Over the past several decades there have been many protestors against the use of this term for the NFL team in Washington D.C.
Recently, the use of controversial words has become a heavily debated topic and has gained international attention as seemingly truthful statements to some, cause insult to others. The Times article "Why 'Redskins' Is a Bad Word", by acclaimed linguist and professor John McWhortor, was published around the time the use of the word Redskin was being debated. In the article, McWhortor aims to clarify the condemnation of the word Redskin, by suggesting that the offence does not stem from the literal definition of such words, but instead the negative and often derogatory connotations the words have. McWhorter begins by introducing the recent discussions surrounding the use of the word Redskins, especially the actions taken by Californian schools
“Redskin” is an extremely derogatory term used to describe the reputed color of a Native American 's skin tone. Along with the simply disrespectful terminology, the phrase has a history of being used alongside bounty for the scalping of Native Americans, so it is without a doubt offensive to many people. Washington 's choice to continue using the word as a name for their popular sports team has been the cause of much controversy. Despite the pleas of millions of people, advocacy groups and even government officials to change the name, the sports team remains unchanged. The absolute least we as a nation and sports league can do is take away a name that the Native Americans find offense to their culture. We have not given them a voice until recently, although it is still flawed in how we value their opinion. Calling redskin on telling on television or shouting out loud on field can make native american mad. We know that from your perctive it doesn't mean anything bad to native indian, but from their percitive it is disparaging to them. We know that from your point of view it would sound crazy, but by saying that name can make them mad and it can lead to a fight and if that happen it going to be wost for the both side. James Madison University’s newspaper, The Breeze, printed an article September 13, 2017, which stated, “Numerous polls have provided insight into the fact that today’s Native Americans overwhelmingly view the team’s use of the word as being innocent and not in need of removal” (Ford). However, the article then reminds us that during “Andrew Jackson’s administration in the late 1820s and through the majority of the 1830s, the word began to hold a negative, derogatory connotation. ”(Ford). This is a negation because of the negativity it caused.
The Cherokee Indians never lived in tipis, they lived in permanent houses. In the winter, they lived in houses of woven saplings, plastered with mud and the roof was made of bark. In the summer, they lived in open- air dwellings and the roof was made out of bark. The agriculture and mythology of a culture has a large influence on the traditions and the way in which a culture behaves. Both agriculture and mythology play huge roles in every day lives of the community under which they thrive. Prior to the settlement of the thirteen colonies in the United States there were several differentiating groups of indigenous people that lived in communities through out the US. These people were the Native Americans and each tribe of these people had different ways of agriculture, mythology, and several other varying facets of life. The Cherokee is a tribe that still thrives currently and has 293,074 people in their population.
Throughout the 1930’s, all the way to about 1960, Dartmouth’s portrayal of the Native American had become accepted as fact, and engrossed into the everyday culture of the school. From large, extravagant murals, inaccurately representing Native Americans, to football chants and screams that mocked the Native American culture, the duration of the Dartmouth Indian mascot was long, and tells an interesting story about the attitudes that prevailed over the decades. It also provides insight as to why Dartmouth College currently has no official mascot, and probably never will again. Many would probably be surprised to learn of the crucial role Native Americans played in the founding of Dartmouth College. Dartmouth’s existence was, in part, based on the idea that Native Americans needed to be educated, and cultured.
Over the past few years, the controversy over sports names or mascots has increasingly become an uproar. The main sports teams being targeted due to controversial mascots are programs having names that deal with Native Americans. Well known programs, such as, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins are just a few of the many teams being targeted due to controversial team names and/or mascots. Currently, the Redskins are receiving the most heat from racial groups. However, professional sport teams are not the only teams receiving negative remarks; there are well known colleges that are also receiving huge blows for racial symbols.
