The task the town council requested was to determine which of the three materials limestone, granite, or red sandstone was better for statues at the local zoo. To establish the most useful material, test how much the pH of the vinegar changed after the rock reacted. The stone which will be the most effective is the one which reacted with the acid rain the least. The greater the pH change the higher the reaction was. Consequently the material with the lowest pH difference would be the most reliable. Neutralization is when acids and bases change into salt and water. The reason this is important to the lab is if the material is more of a base there will be faster deterioration of the material. Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic due to atmospheric pollution. The pH value of acid rain is 4.0. Results of acid rain can be severe causing the death of plants and animals. It will also harm statues and buildings. The Statue of Liberty used to be copper, but due to the effect of acid rain over time it has turned green. When compounds such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the atmosphere, they mix and then react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals. Once these chemicals combine in the air acid rain is created. The geocycles which are involved with acid rain include the sulfur cycle, nitrogen cycle, and the water cycle. The sulfur …show more content…

If the stone was left in the vinegar for a longer period of time, then the pH level of the vinegar would have a greater change. Because it has had more time to react with the stone. Yes the hypothesis was supported, we tested the pH of the vinegar in the beginning and it was 2. After 10 minutes of vinegar with limestone the pH changed to 3. The material which was affected most by the acid rain was the limestone. Reasoning behind this is, the pH changed the most out of all three
