Beak Lab Analysis Charles Darwin , a naturalist, discovered and stated that organisms arise and grow and develop through the natural selection. Natural selection is the process in which nearby organisms well adapted to the environment to survive and to produce offspring. In class we did a lab where we studied the amounts of food birds get with their different sizes of beaks. For an example, we use a spoon to represent a larger beak I found that it was harder to pick the food.
Paragraph 1: Introduction - explain your lab. The lab that I chose to do was the “McGraw Hill Higher Education: Natural Selection - Virtual Lab.” I chose this lab because it was the one that most interested me, as I liked the format of the virtual lab. In this lab, I was able to manipulate both the environment and the allele frequency in order to record and investigate the generational breeding patterns of a group of organisms.
This meant that in the population there were already ten different color of prey that occurred naturally. However, when the environment was a blue background with colorful flowers and butterflies, many of the different colored prey had gone extinct and the red prey had the highest number of survivors. Also, environment two was pink, white, and black plaid and the prey that had the most number of survivors in that environment was white. This demonstrates that depending on the environment, different variations of a trait would be successful. It also demonstrates that the adaptations in this experiment depended on the environments.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this lab is to determine the effects of natural selection on the populations of predators and prey. Beans representing “prey” were scattered in a grass field. Forks, spoons, knives, and forceps were used as “predators” and were placed in an area to see which was best adapted to the environment. In the end, forceps managed to catch the most prey.
I conducted a lab that would investigate the question of whether or not camouflage favored natural selection. If an animal blended into its surroundings, I wanted to know if it could more effectively evade predators and survive as a species. I hypothesized that if I were a predatory bird hunting for mice in a field, then the mice that were camouflaged with their environment would be harder to find. The results did not support my hypothesis, as most of the mice (often more than 2/3) that had a similar appearance to the field they lived in were hunted, and did not escape predators. You can determine if a predatory bird would have more difficulty finding mice that were camouflaged with their environment.
This change in portions of a population over time matches Charles Darwin's thoughts on evolution (Millstein 2021), which we aim to evaluate in our experiment. We intend on doing this study by using knives, forks, and spoons to represent plastic claws in an environment and having them compete against one another, having beans as their main resource. We hypothesize spoons will become the dominant trait over generations of natural selection due to it being the best trait to scoop as many beans as possible. Materials and Methods This experiment started with 3 groups, each representing the different phenotypes of plastica. One group was spoons, the second was knives, and the third was forks.

This experiment was conducted with the aim of modelling the process of natural selection as it relates to favourable characteristics within a species. This experiment sought to model, in particular, the effect of physical characteristics on a predator’s ability to catch their prey, thus affecting their survival rate and subsequent reproductive success. The variation in this experiment was the predator’s “beak” shape while the “prey” was kept consistent throughout this experiment. Natural Selection Introduction: Natural Selection is the ability to survive and reproduce in a given environment. It is known due to evolution that has occurred over time and how mutation, migration, and genetic drift have changed. There is a variation in traits in animals, for example some birds have bigger beaks that can be used to feed on worms and bugs that are way underneath the river and lakes. Also there is a differential reproduction that occurs because not all animals can reproduce the same amount and there is a limit that the environment can support over time.

I found this weeks reading assignment rather interesting, it discussed several valuable ideas some I had poundered myself. The author details his idea that “natural selection does not care about the quality of our golden years” meaning that nature only cares about one's ability to reproduce and to raise offspring. As long as they are able to mature without any complications and bring in the next generation, you have successfully contributed to nature.
