All organisms have specific adaptations which help survival. There are three categories of adaptations; structural, physiological, and behavioural. Over generations an organism might become so different from its ancestors that if they were put together they wouldn’t be capable of producing fertile offspring, creating a new subspecies. A similar thing may happen if one population is divided, then over time adapt to new surroundings. This process is called natural selection and can be found throughout any organism’s history, but can only occur if there is variation within a species. An example of adaptations is the camel.

Using a random generator, one can determine the number and colour of pasta ‘offspring’ for future generations. For this experiment there will be three different coloured pasta (green, red, and yellow) and the generator will randomly pair two pasta to ‘breed.’ Of the offspring to be produced there will be a 77% chance of yellow offspring, 11% chance for green and an 11% chance of red. This is because only a pairing of green/green will produce green, and red/red will produce red. Any other colour pairing will produce yellow offspring. Due to the difficulties with producing red or green it is expected that yellow will have the most generations based on sheer numbers. Since any surviving green or red pasta will still be able to breed with yellow, this experiment does not technically show natural selection, but one can still observe how the selection process might work. This would leave a yellow species capable of breeding and producing even more yellow, therefore evolving into another yellow-only species over time. Eventually with the extinction of green and red the yellow population count will slow down, yet still thrive. As a new species was not created the model of natural selection did not work. In order for the experiment to show natural selection a new species would have to be formed which is incapable of breeding with the initial species.
