A nature reserve is a protected area for the purpose of saving the rare or endangered animals and plants that live there. A nature reserve differs from a zoo usually in having a sole purpose which is the protection of nature. This report first introduces the background of the nature reserve, advantages and disadvantages of the nature reserve are discussed and followed by a conclusion.
Background
Nowadays there are thousands of nature reserves to save special species and nature. It’s considered as one of the greatest inventions of human towards protecting the nature. Mihintale Wildlife Sanctuary which is located in a small Island in Sri Lanka, is believed to be the first sanctuary in the world. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary by King Devanampiya Tissa in 247 BC. First, wildlife sanctuaries help protect wildlife. Unfortunately, many animal species on the verge of being extinct, mostly because their natural habitats are being gradually destroyed. Wildlife sanctuaries provide a safe environment for wildlife to survive and breed. Without wildlife sanctuaries, certain animal species are at superior risk of becoming extinct. Second, Rehabilitation is available for a various types of animals. There no specific species, sanctuaries can accept any neglected or abused animal, Shea (2014) points out that “Sanctuaries promise to take in and care for any animals that have been abused, neglected, or abandoned and to keep them for life”.
