My task today is to convince you that nurturing has a greater effect on a person 's personality than nature. The nurture vs. nature debate has been a great controversial subject to most psychologists for a very long time. A lot of psychologists argue that a person 's characteristics can be influenced by both nurture and nature. The writer 's belief is that nurturing has a greater influence on shaping one 's personality. Although nature (genetics) plays a vital role in the process, its impact is not as evident.
First and foremost nature refers to heredity. The transmission of genetic traits from parents to their offspring. It predisposes one to certain physical attributes and behavior. This makes an individual unique. The tendencies that are influenced by nature are eye color, hair color, and skin tone. Pioneer in intelligence testing, Sir Francis Glaton believed that behavior and intelligence depended almost entirely on one 's genetic makeup. In evolutionary psychology, studies show how evolution may have shaped animal and human behavior. Many of the genes organisms have are thought to be the result of evolution.
