In the nineteenth century, societies around the world had been brought within a single, rapidly evolving world system as a result of what we call the modern revolution. This system connected various regions and many people economically, politically, and culturally. Within this system, some states and groups gained vast wealth and power, while others fell into economic and political decline. The two world wars together were a major cause of change in the global division of power. The wars had many causes, including rivalry for markets and colonies and a the tradition of militarism amongst European countries. The goal is to help people understand the two great dictatorship systems of the twentieth century by giving them access to the primary material.” In Germany, Adolph Hitler’s ideology of ‘National Socialism’ offered a second authoritarian substitute to liberal democracy. This built on the sense of anguish that World War I, the Depression, and the penalizing war reparations caused amongst Germans.
