The instruction of enlisted soldiers in the Army is not a new concept. It is a concept that has been in place since the beginning of the Army’s history. The new Army 2020 soldier and NCO strategies have evolved from the changes the Army saw from the last 15 years of war. The focus has moved from preparing everyone to be infantry and combat roles, to now verifying that all soldiers are properly suited for their specific job. The mental and physical skills needed for every MOS specialty in the Army are not the same. The Army has been conducting research in this particular area so that soldiers can still be a valuable member of the team but be more MOS skill specific. The NCO 2020 Soldier concept encompasses many different types of challenges from meeting the challenges of our new type of warfare to the vast difference skill sets that the new army soldiers have. We also need to consider the fact that many soldiers have deployed multiple times in Afghanistan and Iraq over the years, gaining knowledge on the art of our type of war and understanding the limitations our soldiers and leaders have encountered. This makes our senior Soldiers and junior NCOs very smart and adaptable in today’s constantly challenging environment. All of the soldiers that did not have combat experience were at a strong disadvantage. The Leadership courses were failing the soldier because the training did not help teach them the lessons learned in combat. This program has revamped the courses in which NCO’s must attend for promotion. Sergeant E-5 through CSM E-9 will have to attend an NCOPDS course prior to promotion. NCO’s must accomplish the corresponding course within certain time constraints for pinning of the next rank. The goal of this program is to insure that our NCO’s are able to adapt and fight with confidence in our consistently changing operational environment. The Army is trying to separate from the times where NCO’s are not just about the rank and pay. It is more important that NCO’s understand their jobs and have the skills and resources required for mission accomplishment.
