As Sergeants in the United States Army, it is crucial to focus on developing fundamental skills among our soldiers. Sergeants play a critical role in mastering fundamental skills by leading by example, fostering open communication, and being adaptable to the new modern age of soldiers and war. With a new generation of soldiers joining the Army, I believe it has caused some distress, and going back to the basics will support our soldiers. They should be setting the expectations high. When soldiers see the expectations, they will be more successful in mastering fundamental skills. Fostering open communication is a key component to leading a successful group of soldiers. With modern technology, there are multiple modes of communication to use. The strongest foundation for communication is face-to-face conversation. Leaders must be able to clearly explain expectations, directions, and orders. Soldiers need to be able to listen to those expectations, directions, and orders in order to successfully perform the duties expected of them. When the common goal is clearly stated, a team will be cohesive and efficient in getting the mission accomplished. Through in-person conversations, soldiers will build better relationships with their leaders. Soldiers who feel seen and heard will feel comfortable communicating with their NCO’s. By having an open and approachable line of communication, problems will get solved quicker, and more effectively.
