Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia McLachlan is a historical fiction which takes place in a rural place, such as, the prairie sometime during the 1800’s. This book centers around characters Anna, the 12 year old narrator, Caleb, Anna’s little brother, Jacob, the children’s father, and Sarah Wheaton, papa’s new wife. Anna, Caleb and their father, Jacob are so stricken by their mother’s death that they long for the need for her void to be filled. The children soon become worried for their father because this almost seemed impossible. Anna’s father, Jacob was having a hard time raising his family and taking care of his farms’ needs after the passing of his wife, so he began to search for another wife.
This month I am privileged to share an exclusive look into the life of Sandra Gathers, who I find to be extremely passionate and dedicated to all aspects of her life. Along with 3 sisters, Sandra was born and raised in Eutawville, SC. Most people are usually surprised to learn that she was raised on a working farm. Even though she had to work very hard as a young girl, it shaped the work ethics that she encompasses to this day. Sandra graduated from Holly Hill High where she was a member of the beta club, yearbook staff and library club.

Cindy Droog, a middle-aged author, that started writing in the first grade. She continued writing and eventually went to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University for her bachelor degree in journalism and public relations (Droog). Years later, she went to receive her master's degree in communications management at Syracuse University. Droog started out writing as a ghostwriter for “doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, hockey players, and others whose intelligence – or recurring head injuries – paralyzed their ability to communicate with the common folk” (Droog). But eventually, became sick of it and started her first weekly column, The Stay-At-Work Mom.
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
Carrie Chapman Catt was born on January 9, 1859 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Carries father would not pay for her college education so Carrie began working as a teacher to earn the money to go to college at Iowa State College. In 1880 Carrie graduated Iowa State College with a bachelor’s degree. The following year Carrie became a high school principal in Iowa then two years later she became the superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa. Carrie married Leo Chapman who was a newspaper editor in 1885.
Family is the biggest significance in my life, even if I did not have the strongest bond with all my relatives, because I knew I could count on them if I ever needed help. Relatives came from all over the United States to come celebrate with me, so I truly felt special that day.
In “The Pastoralization of Housework” by Jeanne Boydston, Boydston explores the effect of the romanization of housework. The pastoralization of housework that occurred during the Antebellum period was the result of the development of early industrialization. In order to have something remain constant in the changing times the formation of two separate gender spheres allowed a routine to an ever changing society. The Monitor on Psychology article “What makes good people do bad things?” by Melissa Dittmann analyzes the results of the Stanford Prison Experiment conducted by Stanford psychology professor Phillip Zimbardo in 1971 and discusses what the experiment can tell us about human nature and what causes humans to be evil. In the novel “Lord of the Flies” the author William Golding discusses the effects of the theories mentioned in the article by creating his own fictional experiment with children stranded on an island during a nuclear war. Throughout his novel Golding explores the focus of Dittmann’s article; that environments and situations can bring out the evil that is inside all of us. People can act good or bad depending on their environment, and these actions are not entirely their fault because when people are not held accountable for their actions their more violent natures are revealed.

The Introvert’s Bible: Quiet by Susan Cain Susan Cain’s Quiet opens on a familiar scene: Rosa Parks’s refusal to relinquish her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama public bus. Most descriptions of this tide-changing event stop there, but Cain goes deeper into the personality of the late civil-rights advocate, and reveals something unexpected: Rosa Parks was an introvert. Parks is not the only introvert to have swayed the course of history; throughout the book, Cain discusses example after example of individuals with “quiet power”.
“Reasons To Be Pretty”, is the play chosen for the director’s analysis essay. This play was written by Neil LaBute and was first performed in 2008. The story takes place during the spring in present day Pittsburgh. Scene 1 takes place in the middle of the day and finds Steph and Greg arguing.
Do you know that Shakespeare is not the only gifted writer in his family? This mysterious member exists in the English writer Virginia Woolf’s imagination. In her famous essay “Shakespeare’s Sister,” Woolf uses the hypothetical anecdote of Judith Shakespeare as her main evidence to argue against a dinner guest, who believes that women are incapable of writing great literature. During the time when Judith is created, women are considered to be naturally inferior to men and are expected to be passive and domestic. Regarding her potential audience, educated men, as “conservative,” Woolf attempts to persuade them that social discouragement is the real cause of the lack of great female writers without irritating them by proposing “radical” arguments.
