Martin Luther sparked the Reformation in 1517 by nailing his “95 Theses” on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany; it listed his concerns with the practices of the Catholic Church. The Church responded to Luther by opening the Council of Trent, this was called the Counter-Reformation. Through the Protestant Reformation, numerous denominations emerged, including Lutheranism, and Calvinism.
