“Why don’t you just shoot us?” said an Unknown Nazi war criminal (Trueman). This was stated during the Nuremberg Trials. They were being charged with crimes against peace, war crimes, and defined crimes against humanity. Those being tried wanted it to end because they knew they would most likely be sentenced to death. My first topic will discuss what happened after the liberation, where the Jewish people went, and what happened to them after they were freed. My next topic will explain what happened to the Nazi war criminals as a result of the Nuremberg Trials. My last topic will explain what Neo Nazis do in today in today’s society. The 24 defendants included some of the higher ranking officers and responsible political, military and police officials of the Nazi regime who had established the policy of mass murdering Jewish people. The tribunal indicted the Nazi Regime and others charged with crimes against peace, war crimes, and defined crimes against humanity. These acts were now obviously acknowledged as grave crimes under international law. Three of the highest ranking officers did not go to trial as they committed suicide before the end of the war, they included Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler and Joseph Goebbels. Twelve defendants were sentenced to be executed. Among them were Hermann Göring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Hans Frank and Julius Streicher. However, Göring hung himself before his scheduled execution. The evidence provided at the trials included massive volumes of documents written by the Nazis themselves, as well as others testifying against them. Testimony presented at Nuremberg revealed much of what is now known about the Holocaust, including the details of what happened in Auschwitz, the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto, and the estimate of six million Jewish victims that happened during that time period. But the extermination of the European Jews was not an independent charge at the trial, but was included in ’crimes against humanity’.
