In the past, the only way to view a new film was by going to the local cinema and watching it on 35mm film. To watch a TV program you had to watch it on the television at its scheduled time. There were only 2 ways of watching media where as in more recent times there are countless ways to view new media. The introduction of Netflix to Australia has changed the way in which audiences can watch new content. Along with other new platforms, they, like Netflix are changing and challenging the distribution of media in Australia from traditional to digital. In order for Australian content to keep up with other countries like America, creators of content need to utilise these new technologies and get their media out there in this new way.

Netflix allows you to pay a monthly subscription for unlimited streaming of all television shows and movies that are available on the service. It has challenged the illegal downloading of movies by providing audiences to access what they want, when they want. According to Torrent Freak (2015) Australia is at the top of the ‘leaderboard’ in terms of the rate of illegal downloading compared to other countries. Australia sits at 11.6% followed by America, which sit at 9.3%. The introduction of Netflix into Australia will cut down that percentage by providing this service and allowing people to legally watch television shows and movies. Many production houses are supporting Netflix and wanting their content to be available on the site so it is easier for audiences to access their programs. Netflix will also provide Australians with a load of series from the US that they can access when they like, so a whole series can be watched in one day. It is something new and exciting for Australians as they can view media from another country faster and easier than they could before. According to Pocketbook (2014) it is estimated that 200,000 Australians signed up with the Netflix service, which shows that Australians actually are using this service.
