How is the New Deal like progressivism and populism and how effective is it?
The New Deal was put in place to get the United States of America out of the Great Depression. The New Deal is like both populism and progressivism. Both the new deal and populism are trying to help the common people who don’t have a job or any income. The New Deal is like progressivism because the New Deal would allow the United States to advance in technological areas. Overall, the New Deal played a role in the way of getting the United States out of the Great Depression; in addition, the New Deal is like progressivism and populism in the fact that it is trying to care for the ordinary people, so the United States can advance. The New Deal supported farmers, the unemployed, and the youth as well as the elderly. The New Deal gave structure to the government and the banking system as well as the stock market at the time. Alan Brinkley the author of The Unfinished Nation states, “It increased the regulatory functions of the federal government in ways that helped stabilize previously troubled areas of the economy…” (597). With the New Deal stabilizing the economy the government could focus on other things. The New Deal put in place federal programs to give assistance to millions of people without a job which was desperately needed to stabilize the American Economy. The New Deal helped tremendously in the west by receiving more government funds. Alan Brinkley illustrates, “The West received more government funds per capita through relief programs than any other region” (597). The West used this money to fund great dams and power stations and water projects. With the dams for electricity and water projects, it gave the people in the West cheap power and water. With the cheap power and water, the people in the West could spend their money on other things there for helping regulate the economy with money flow. Alan Brinkley states, “Well before the end of the nineteenth century, many Americans had become convinced that rapid industrialization and urbanization had created a growing crisis” (476). Some of the main points of the progressivism movant were the role of women in society, racial equality, the rights of labor, and the impact of immigration (476). The supporters wanted to change the way the United States was progressing. Overall, Progressivism is similar to the New deal because they wanted them to change and needed stabilization in the way the United States was progressing in the future.
